Instruments made in the former USSR, like this Mbu-4 ‘Junior’ microscope, cannot always be identified easily. In a ‘Zenith’ catalogue from the nineteen seventies this Mbu-4 ‘Junior’ microscope is mentioned. They were imported by Technical & Optical Equipment Ltd and sold under the brand name ‘Zenith’.

The microscope is mounted on a foot, which forms the bottom of the canister in which it is stored. In the foot the optics can be stored as well. The construction is very classic, a horseshoe foot with the limb of the microscope, molded in one piece. There is a circular stage with spring clips, below the stage the condenser and a mirror in a bracket. The coarse and the fine adjustment act on the body tube by rackwork. There is a triple objective changer. The microscope has a grey-green enamelled finish, some parts are chromium plated.

Until now, we did not succeed retrieving the underlying brand of this MBU-4 microscope. The brand Zenith, however, is clearly visible.
