The microtome has a round table with a hole in the middle. Below the table an attached hollow pillar with a round block that fits in the hole in the table and which can be moved up and down by means of a micrometer screw. On this block the specimen is fixed and the micrometer screw is adjusted in such a way that the required thickness of the specimen can be cut with the razor when this is moved over the table.
