CHEVALIER

Charles Louis Chevalier (1804–1859)

Charles Louis Chevalier was an optician and instrument maker, just like his father (Vincent Jacques Louis Chevalier (1770-1841)) and grandfather (Louis Vincent Chevalier (1734-1804)). Louis founded the family’s company in Paris in 1765. The firm became famous for Vincent’s work on achromatic lenses and their lens/prism optics for camera obscuras. Vincent and Charles formed a partnership on the Quai de l’Horloge about 1825. In 1831, Charles moved to the Palais-Royal. From 1841, they produced microscopes, spectacles, and other optical instruments.

After Charles’ death, his son, Arthur took over. Their 1885 catalogue includes a range of optical equipment including cameras, telescopes and binoculars as well as microscopes.
